The MIT also must be able to identify acute and chronic cardiac disease along with signs and symptoms of both processes and potential outcomes for these conditions during an ultrasound study. Must be able to identify when the severity of the disease (i.e. severity of stenosis, appearance of aneurysms, pericardial effusions, and thrombus) is indicative of further testing and requesting permission to proceed with other testing thus enabling a more thorough result for the patient. Must also be able to act as clinical manager in their absence. Other duties include but are not limited to the following; Obtain brief history/physical pertinent to exam to be performed. Controls technical factors on ultrasound unit which will affect time, gain, amplitude, velocity, and frequency attenuation, absorption, reflection scattering and refraction and diffraction. Collaborates with the medical staff to establish comprehensive integrated treatment plans which identify appropriate examination procedures and techniques. Advises the referring physician with a preliminary result of the exam. Ability to assist the cardiologist with procedures both in the Cath lab and/or inpatient rooms when requested. Collaborates with the lab medical director and supervisor to devise and maintain protocols and procedures applicable to performance of echocardiogram imaging exams with revisions according to industry standards. Operates in a supervisory capacity when the manager is out. Work Schedule:

Medical Instrument Technicians must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 7407(d). Preferred
Experience:
Prefer at least two years of experience, but not required, in performing a full range of echocardiographic procedures including transthoracic echocardiograms, transesophageal echocardiograms, and exercise and pharmacological stress echocardiograms. Knowledge of sterile processes and be able to assist with pericardialcentesis, intra-op and Cath lab echocardiographic procedures. Incumbent is expected to perform the full range of echocardiographic procedures and provide results for clinical diagnosis. Registered or registry eligible with ARDMS or CCI. Incumbent must have BLS certification. Grade Determinations:
In addition to meeting the basic requirements stated above, the following qualifications criteria must be met in determining the appropriate grade assignment of candidates. GS-09 candidates must have all the following:
At least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-08) in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of this experience includes echocardiography technicians at this level identify and record anomalies indicative of disease, injury, or other medically significant condition from ultrasound imaging and simultaneous recordings of the Doppler. They incorporate the causes and results of a variety of symptoms and conditions into a plan of ultrasonic diagnostic examination. They change and develop sounding techniques to accommodate such variables as limited patient mobility, variation in physical condition or dimension of the patient, presence of prosthesis or foreign objects, and ultrasonic response of different body parts. They produce diagnostic quality images and Doppler frequency recordings using M-mode, two-dimensional, and Doppler ultrasound. 1.Knowledge of the more complex examination and treatment procedures and techniques in order to provide training and supervision in these procedures, to evaluate and initiate performance improvement projects, and to write policies, procedures, and protocols, that pertain to Echocardiography. 2.Knowledge of JCAHO and other regulatory requirements. 3.Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with employees at varying grade levels. 4.Ability to manage and supervise employees. 5.Ability to provide, or provide for, staff development and training. Certification:
Registration by Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) as a Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RCS) or by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) as a Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) is highly desirable. Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications are also desirable. Assignments:
