JOB DESCRIPTION
The Sander prepares transformers for painting, including scraping, washing, adhesive removal, blow-drying, masking, prepping, and sanding. The Sander also provides backup support for the painter.
Typical duties include:
Removing adhesive labels from Transformers and other oil filled equipment: Scrapes stickers from units using a razor blade scraper. Cleans porcelain bushings to remove dirt, debris and adhesive residue.
Washing of Transformers and other oil filled equipment : Loads wash bay with units on carts. Sprays equipment with degreaser and various soaps to thoroughly clean units so paint will adhere. (Procedure requires the use of ear plugs and rubber gloves).
Rinsing of Transformers and other oil filled equipment: Thoroughly rinses units using a high pressure washer, being careful to follow established procedures. (Procedure requires the use of ear plugs and rubber gloves).
Masking of Transformers and other oil filled equipment : Masks primary and secondary bushings, ground lugs, data plates, and other areas according to established procedure.
Sanding of Transformers and other oil filled equipment: Sands units according to prescribed procedures, checks surfaces, chooses appropriate product, grinds metal parts, and applies rust converter if warranted, and primes bare metal. Procedure requires the use of proper protective equipment. Proper PPE includes: ear plugs, rubber gloves, over the ankle safety toe shoes, safety glasses, dust mask, and face shield.
REQUIRED SKILLS
Knowledge of:
Pressurized painting systems and procedures
Auto body and painting techniques
Skills in:
Sanding, prepping, and painting metal surfaces

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education:
High school diploma or GED.
Experience:
One year of experience with auto body preparation, hand-held tools, painting techniques, and pressurized painting systems (High Volume Low Pressure or HVLP).
Prefer 3 years of the above experience.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Position requires the ability to bend, stoop, squat, crouch, climb, twist, kneel, balance and reach. Frequently use repetitive hand and arm motion (washing and sanding); stand for long periods of time. Occasionally lift shoulder high and above, waist and knee high items weighing up to 25 lbs; occasionally carry with one hand or two hands tools weighing up to 25 lbs; occasionally use exertional force greater than 50 lbs. Requires the ability to operate foot pedals while operating a vehicle. Must be able to grasp and hold simple hand tools and testing equipment and use fine motor skills while sanding. Applicant must be able to perform the essential functions of the job without posing a direct threat of harm to self, others, or property.
Job placement is contingent upon successful completion of a pre-employment, post-offer Functional Capacity Assessment (FCA).
